Maria Petković was born December 10, 1892 in Blato on the island of Korčula. She came from a large well to do family. Her parents were Antun and Marija Marinović.Clever and wise at a young age she helped the poor and less fortunate. She showed a special concern for children and youth. With financial help she offered them Christian hope in God's mercy. With natural and supernatural gifts she led several Catholic associations. She inspired all towards prayer and good deeds in her parish.

At an early age she had the desire to devote her life to God and the saving of souls by leading a consecrated life. Although her parents were religious, they did not support her aspiration, because they had different plans for her. God inspired Bishhop of Dubrovnik Dr. Josip Marčelić to persuade her mother to allow Maria to become a nun. With the help of the Bishop she founded the Franciscan Order 'The Daughters of Mercy'. The original Croatian order of 'The Daughters of Mercy' was founded October 4, 1920 in Blato. The founder was Marija Propetog Isusa Petković with five associates from Blato and Vela Luka. By 1936 the order expanded to countries in South America. Since 1956 the Order becomes of pontifical right. Pope has all rights to the order.

She worked in the South American missions during 12 years, where she succeeded to recruit numerous local vocations, founding the first houses for formation. That way, she enriched Order with South – American vocations. The main center for the order was established in Rome, Via di Porta Maggiore 38 in 1952. For forty years she led the order leaving behind for her followers rich spiritual and cultural heritage, contained in different writtings.Exhausted from being heavily paralyzed from a stroke, she died July 9, 1966 in Rome. Her human remains rested there until December 21, 1998. On the recommendation of the postulator Father Paula Lombarda, OFM and the decision of the supreme administration her remains were transferred to the crypt located in the chapel of Christ the King (hr: Krista Kralja) in of the founding home.

Unclotted blood taken from her in 1966 because of high blood pressure remains in the room where she lived. The process of beatification for the servant of God Maria of the Crucified Jesus Petković commenced on the 28th of February 1989, in the Vicariate of Rome where the diocese's proceedings have been completed on the 20th of June 1997.

The beatification process is reaching its completion and is now awaiting to be announced publicly. Let us influence the intercession of our holy servant that the Lord bless us with spiritual and timeless mercy.
